The closer you grow to God, the more you become aware of your sins and your weaknesses. The more you become aware of your weaknesses, the more you lean upon the Lord for strength. Then the cycle begins again. Being aware of your sins is a sign of holiness.
This is an upward spiritual spiral that happens when the Lord is in the center of your life. Peace and joy can be found here because this upward spiritual spiral is not just about realizing the limits of your humanity, (which can be a great cause of growth in the virtue of Humility), but about coming to a greater awareness of the graces God is ready to pour into you. He is the vine; all things are possible with God and peace and joy come from this realization.
A repeating spiritual spiral that stays in the same place, or a lukewarm spiritual spiral, occurs when the Lord is halfway in the picture of your life and you try to attain holiness. Peace and joy can be experienced, but they won’t be felt as powerfully.
To truly grow in holiness, we need to make God the center of our lives.
