Overcoming a Porn Addiction

If you are one of the many men out there who are struggling with a porn addiction, here are five steps that will help you overcome the habit:

1) Read both of my posts on “mature purity” which can be found in the TOB category and start living out the three keys of Chastity.

2) Get to know Matt Fradd’s work:

(also, covenanteyes.com has some great ebooks about the effects of pornography:

3) Kick off your study of the Theology of the Body by first purchasing Jason Evert’s booklet, “Pure Manhood” (The back of the booklet has 10 steps for staying pure, which is very helpful):

4) Mention your struggle to a close guy friend, either one of your buds or a group of them (you may actually find that they are also struggling with the same issue). The goal in telling them is to become accountable to them. Overcoming a porn addiction is not something you should try to do alone. What stays in darkness, festers in darkness. Whenever you are tempted, you could do something as simple as send your friend a code word over text and they would know to start praying for you and/or give you a call. You could also install covenanteyes which has accountability software. The bottom line is we aren’t meant to fight the addiction alone.

5) Finally, be patient. Overcoming a porn addiction is something that takes time, but everything is possible with God. Pray to Him daily for the virtues I mentioned in my “mature purity” posts and you will begin to see a change. This change will be gradual, but, with God’s help, the more you struggle against the temptation to look at porn, the easier it will become to say “no”. Also, spend time in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. In adoration, ask Jesus to heal the wounds that pornography has inflicted and beg of Him the grace to see woman as a manifestation of divine beauty; to be pure of heart. I strongly recommend offering up these intentions during a chaplet of divine mercy. I’ve posted a website link below that explains the devotion.

Remember, you are fighting this fight because you want to be able to love authentically and this is only possible if we are first “free” to love. Saying “no” to porn isn’t the only goal, the other goal, and the main goal really, is that we want to be able to say “yes” to love and to be able to mean it.
